The Top 5 Essential Oils for Healthy Hair


It’s almost spring! In case you weren’t watching with bated breath, Punxutawny Phil, the weather prophet extraordinaire, did not see his shadow this year.  Therefore, we’re bound to see an early spring.  This is great news for the millions of women out there who, like me, have been struggling with a head of dry, damaged hair.  Sound familiar?

If you’re anything like me, you wash, condition and dry almost daily, not to mention the teasing, twisting and pulling.  And hair damage can be caused from almost everything in our lives – from stress to environmental damage.  Ultimately, this leads to a depletion of nourishing oils, along with generally lackluster hair.  Not so fabulous.

The good news is, adding essential oils (EOs) into your hair care routine may be just what you need to restore shine and life to your locks.

Essential oils can penetrate deep into the shaft and hair follicles, and in addition to the many health benefits they offer, they can also be used to help a huge array of hair issues: cleansing the scalp, strengthening hair, controlling irritation, stimulating the follicles, increasing circulation and even supporting growth.  For best results, use therapeutic grade essential oils, and while you can mix a few drops right into your shampoo or conditioner, you can also use the oils diluted with a carrier oil, like Fractionated Coconut Oil, and massage right into your hair and scalp.

This oil is amazing for brittle and dry hair, which so many of us experience during the bitter cold winter.  It has calming qualities, which soothe the hair and scalp.  Chamomile also promotes shine and softness, and isn’t that what we all really want?



This is known to stimulate hair follicles, as well as help with irritated, dry and flaky scalp.  It’s a common ingredient in many shampoos because it’s one of the best essential oils for enhancing hair-growth.  Rosemary helps increase circulation in the scalp to improve growth – both longer and stronger.

If you’re looking at dull and lifeless hair, this is a great EO to try.  Helichrysum is known to rejuvenate tissue, including on the scalp.  Like the oils above, it’s an essential oil found in many products for the hair and scalp.  It helps reinvigorate the follicles and is extremely beneficial for the growth of beautiful tresses.

I happen to have very thin hair (“fine” as the hairstylists like to call it, in a lame attempt to make me feel better), which just doesn’t work very well with extremely dry, cold weather.  So in addition to a lifeless, knotty mess, I have the added benefit of maximum static.  It’s truly a sight to behold.  I’ve tried dozens of different products that promise to be the end-all-be-all to my hair woes, and what I’ve discovered is that incorporating my beloved essential oils into my hair-care routine has worked wonders.
